Terms of service

Who you are buying from

0981308 BC Ltd, a company registered in British Columbia, Canada, trading as penwynn.com. These terms apply when you use this site or buy a book.

What you are buying

A hardcover picture book, made to order, whose story and illustrations are generated from what you describe. 36 or 48 interior pages, 8 × 8 inches square or 8 × 11 inches portrait.

The illustrations and the story are produced by artificial intelligence from your description. They are new images, not photographs and not drawings of any real person. A character will resemble the description you give rather than a particular face.

Making a book is free; you approve before you pay

You see the characters, read the whole story, and view every illustrated page before there is anything to pay. If you do not like it, close the tab and nothing is charged.

Price, tax and delivery

• 36-page hardcover: $49 USD; each additional copy of the same book $29.
• 48-page hardcover: $59 USD; each additional copy of the same book $34.
• Delivery is included in the price. Sales tax is added at checkout where it applies.
• We sell to Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom only.

Printing and delivery take time — order early

Every book is made to order. Printing starts only after you have approved every page and paid; the book is then printed in the country it is going to and handed to a carrier. That takes much longer than shipping something already on a shelf.

• As a guide, an order within Canada has taken about three weeks from ordering to delivery. Allow at least three weeks wherever you are.
• Allow longer before Christmas and other holidays, when printers and postal services are busiest, and before any date that matters — a birthday, a visit, a new baby.
• Delivery times are estimates, not guarantees. Printers and carriers are outside our control, and we cannot be responsible for a book arriving after a particular occasion. Please order early.
• If your book has not arrived six weeks after you ordered, tell us. We will find out where it is and, if it has been lost in transit, print and send another free of charge.

Cancellations and refunds

A personalized book cannot be cancelled once it has gone to print. It is made for one person and cannot be sold to anyone else. Under UK consumer law, goods made to a consumer's specification are excluded from the usual 14-day right to change your mind, and the same applies here for customers everywhere.

Before printing begins, ask and we will cancel and refund you in full. After that we cannot.

If the book arrives damaged, misprinted, or is not the book you approved, tell us within 30 days of delivery and we will print and send a replacement, free of charge. Send a photograph of the problem — that is usually all it takes, and you do not need to return the damaged copy.

A replacement is the remedy we offer, rather than a refund. A book is made for one person and cannot be resold, so a returned copy is simply destroyed; reprinting puts the book you wanted in your hands, which a refund does not.

This does not affect rights you have by law. If the law where you live entitles you to a refund for faulty goods, you keep that right — ask us and we will honour it.

Content standards

Every Penwynn book is a picture book that may be read to a young child, so every story and illustration must be suitable for one — whatever reading age you choose. You are responsible for what you ask us to make. A book may not contain, and we will not generate:

• Violence or cruelty — fighting, injury, blood, weapons used against people or animals, abuse, or anyone being hurt, threatened or humiliated.
• Frightening or disturbing material — horror, gore, graphic danger, or scenes designed to scare.
• Sexual content or nudity of any kind.
• Hate or harassment — content that demeans people for who they are, or that mocks, bullies or embarrasses a real person.
• Self-harm, suicide, drugs, or dangerous or illegal activity, shown or encouraged.
• Personal details — addresses, schools, phone numbers, web addresses, or anything that shows where a child can be found.
• A real person who would object. Get permission from anyone you name.

Some subjects are part of real childhoods and can be handled gently — a new sibling, a fear of the dark, starting school. Others, such as death or serious illness, we may soften or decline, because we cannot yet write them with the care they need.

Every request is screened automatically, and every generated story and illustration is checked before you see it. We may refuse a request, change or leave out something that does not meet these standards, or cancel an order; if we cancel before printing, you are refunded in full. No automatic check is perfect, which is one more reason you read every page before you pay.

Who owns what

Your book is yours. You may keep it, give it, photograph it and read it aloud, including publicly. You may not resell copies of it or use its illustrations commercially.

The words you write remain yours; you give us permission to use them to make your book. The underlying style, templates and software remain ours, as does the name Penwynn™, a trademark of 0981308 BC Ltd. We never use a customer's book as an example: the books shown on this site are demonstration books, made by us for that purpose, about people who are not customers.

Copyrighted characters, images and brands

A book can be about anybody — your family, your friends, your dog, yourself, or a character out of copyright such as Don Quixote or Alice. What it cannot contain is anything somebody else owns and has not licensed to us:

• Copyrighted characters — for example Princess Elsa and Anna from Frozen, Spider-Man, Harry Potter, Bluey, Peppa Pig or the PAW Patrol pups — by name, or described so closely that they are recognizably that character.
• Copyrighted images — a scene, costume, illustration, film still or cover reproduced from a film, show, game or book.
• Brands and trade marks — logos, branded toys and products, or team and company emblems.

Penwynn does not accept uploaded images, and every character is drawn new from your description. A child can still love snow, a castle or a blue dress: describe the character you want as their own person, and we will draw them that way.

By ordering, you confirm that the people and characters you described are yours to use — your own family, your own invention, or out of copyright. We refuse requests we recognize, but we cannot recognize everything, and you are responsible for what you ask for. If we notice before printing we will tell you and refund in full; if a rights holder contacts us afterwards we will stop selling the book and may have to tell them who ordered it.

This is not us being cautious on your behalf. We write the words and draw the pictures and post the parcel, so an infringing book is one we made, not one we merely carried.

What we do not promise

Colours on a printed page differ slightly from a screen. Generated illustrations are not perfectly consistent, and characters vary a little between pages the way any illustrated book does. We show you every page before you buy precisely so you can judge this for yourself.

We do not guarantee the site is always available. To the extent the law allows, our liability is limited to what you paid for the book. Nothing here limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited.

Governing law

The laws of British Columbia, Canada, and the courts there. If you are a consumer elsewhere, this does not remove protections you have under your own country's law.
